Will the Rajini trick work for Nakul?

Mullum Malarum is one of the famous hits of the superstar. This is one of the films that played a pivotal role in elevating the star status of Rajinikanth. Apart from the excellent acting of all the stars, a winch also played an integral role in Mullum Malarum. While various types of vehicles
were used in movies, this different concept attracted the attention of the movie buffs. However, we did not get to see a winch in movies later on. Perhaps that could be because it did not fit in as perfectly as it did for Mullum Malarum.
Now, after a gap of two decades, a director has come up with this idea for his movie Kadhalil Vizhundhen. He has decided to use a winch in one of the fight sequences thereby repeating the history. Nakul of Boys fame - Devayani’s sibling - plays the lead in Kadhalil Vizhundhen. It remains to be seen as to how far the winch will help Nakul escalating his career.

Yaaradi Nee Mohini on Feb 14

Dhanush’s next film is Yaaradi Nee Mohini. This film is a remake of Telugu blockbuster Aadavari Matllalukku Ardhame Veru Lu. The Telugu version was directed by Dhanush’s brother Selvaraghavan with Venkatesh and Trisha in the lead. In Tamil the film is directed by Jawahar, who was once the assistant of Selvaraghavan. This film is produced by Dhanush’s father. To say more about the film, it is a love story. The heroine will be the MD of a company where the joins as an employee. The love between the duo is said in a comical way. The film has all the commercial elements including romance, family sentiments, stunts and songs mixed in right proportion. Music is by Yuvan Shankar Raja. There is a lot of expectation among Dhanush’s fans since this film is released after his film Polladhavan, which was a super hit film. Likewise, this is Nayanthara’s next film after Billa. So there is a lot of expectation about this film in the minds of the fans. It is for us to wait and watch whether the Yaaradi Nee Mohini unit has fulfilled all the expectations.

Bollywood in a tizzy

Bollywood seems to be in the grip of problems.
On one hand, Central Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss has approached Shahrukh Khan to refrain from smoking in films. Then we have Raj Thakeray’s goondas throwing stones at Amitabh Bachchan’s Mumbai bungalow for buying up property in Uttar Pradesh and not Maharshtra.
Amitabh’s daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai’s latest release 'Jodha Akbar'has come in for threats.

The film is directed by the director of heatres on Feb 15. The film narrates the love story of Mughal King Akbar with the Rajput princess Jodha Bai. But the Rajputs of Rajasthan say there was no such romance and there was not even a Jodha Bai and this film was a slur on their tradition and history. They have been protesting and burning posters

Asin Gets 3 boosters

Even before the release of Hindi 'Ghajini,'Asin is getting offers from Bollywood.
One offer is with Shahid Kapur, Kareena Kapoor’s ex-boyfriend. Another offer came from Honey Irani, to act as Amitabh Bachchan’s daughter.
A third offer was to act as Salman Khan’s jodi. All 3 are good opportunities but Asin has still not accepted any of them.
Salman Khan
After the release of 'Ghajini,'she can become famous overnight like Deepika Padukone and demand crore in fees.

Meena's comeback in Kuselan

The cast of Kuselan, the upcoming Rajinikanth film which is a remake of the Malayalam Katha Paryumbol is getting finalized. The pivotal roles will be done by Rajinikanth and Pasupathy and there have been varied rumors regarding the lady leads in the film. Many leading names were discussed but not confirmed. As regards super star’s heroine, Nayanthara turned lucky for the third consecutive time and bagged the role.

Now for the role of Pasupathy’s wife, Tabu and Simran were considered but they were not able to give their consent due to their prior commitments. In the original version Meena was the wife of Sreenivasan and the mother of three children. When she was approached to do the same role in Tamil, she has also agreed. While talking to the media, director P Vasu said, “As per Kuselan’s script, Meena’s role is that of a young mother whose children are in the school going age group. Her performance was wonderful in Katha Paryumbol and we were very keen that she does the same role in Tamil too. We are also very sure that Meena is the right choice for this role and thankfully she has also agreed to do the film”.

Namitha Sang Glamour

Namitha, known for her skimpy outfits not only in films, but also in public functions, was seen with fully covered dress in a function recently. It was the launch of a new brand of hail oil held at Hotel Benz Park, Chennai on February 3.
Does she want to avoid controversies (or cases) over sexy appearances in public functions?
Nope. She seems to be unfazed by the controversies and continues to appear in glamourous outfits in the functions even after the controversy on Shriya’s dress in ‘Sivaji’ silver jubilee function. She attended the inaugural function of Mega Mart in Valasarawakkam last week in a sexy outfit which revealed her long legs.
So what made her come to the ‘Ammu Hair Tonic’ launch fully clad? It is learnt that organizers had requested her to come in a deglamorized dress. Namitha accepted and came fully clad. Even the body hugging T-shirt created discomfort for some of the organizers but Namitha avoided posing for the photographers with her trade mark sex appeal.

Indiralogathil Na.Azhagappan Movie Review

Cast : Vadivelu, Suja, Theetha, Rari, Nazar, Shriya
Direction: Thambi Ramiah
Music: Sabesh Murali
Production: Manickam Narayanan
Very much on the same lines of Imsai Arasan, Vadivelu has belted out his second venture in the fantasy-comedy series. If Imsai Arasan worked, it was for its genuine, no-nonsense, spontaneous humor set in a unique milieu. Not to mention, the script was taut and extremely appealing. In the same breadth, Indiralogathil Na. Azhagappan has an engaging script, but what seems to be missing from this fantasy-comedy is the sparkling humor that made the earlier one click. The movie would have worked but for the contrived and stale comic sequences that makes one wonder if, instead of coming up with a cohesive comic script, they just cobbled together an ensemble of comedy tracks.
Vadivelu’s intro, with a song, is definitely on par with the biggies in the film industry, reiterating the golden rule of an opening song for the protagonist. Vadivelu’s fans will be delighted to see him don the lead role on-screen once again. The actor has done a commendable job in all the three roles, as Azhagappan, Indiran and Yamadharman. Of the three, the Indiran role seems to suit him best
The story is plain and simple. The three beauties of Indiralogam – Rambai, Oorvasi and Menaka – come down to earth on a visit. Enchanted by Vadivelu’s drama, Rambai is unable to return to her abode within the stipulated time. As a result, she is cursed and turned into a stone sculpture. Meanwhile, Vadivelu is advised by an astrologer to garland the sculpture. Promptly, he garlands her sculpture and Rambai returns to her original self. She also takes Azhagappan along with her to Indiralogam.
His visit to Indiralogam empowers him to predict the past and future of the earthlings. Because of his newfound powers of prediction, the crime rate in the human world declines and there is little work to do in the Yamalogam. Confused, Yamadharman confers the responsibility of investigating this mysterious turn of events to Lord Naradar (enacted by Nasser), who reveals the true cause. Angered by this, Vadivelu is cursed and turns into a 90-year old man.
Given the fact that Vadivelu’s huge chunk of fan population comprises of kids, the director could have avoided the top angles that conveniently feast on the bevy of beauties that encircle Vadivelu. Though Shriya looks good in her small role, the idea of having her play the necromancer doesn’t quite create the desired impact. Vandanam Vanakkam song by Vadivelu and company is quite natural.
Thotta Tharani has done an admirable job with the sets, especially the Yamalogam.
J. N. Jawahar’s editing is adequate, while Sabesh-Murali’s music with its tinge of 23-aam Pulikesi, is very mediocre. Costumer R. Murugan deserves a special mention, but for Vadivelu’s 90-year old act that deserved a little more attention.
Indiralogathil might appeal to those who swear more by Vadivelu’s slapstick antics than his verbal wisecracks. Because there are hardly any verbal fireworks, and those few that are there, are submerged in the extravagance.

Superstar at Tirupathi for mottai

In film world Rajinikanth is known as someone who is very spiritual and religious. He makes it a point to visit holy places whenever time permits. Recently after the Sivaji function and the announcement of his films Kuselan and Robot, the actor had taken a brief break and was at the Himalayas to perform meditation and to visit the caves of his guru Babaji. Now after his return, he was seen at Tirupathi along with his wife, two daughters, son-in-law Dhanush and his grand son Yathra.
As expected there was some kind of excitement among the devotees which was put to rest soon and Rajini's family had a good darshan of Lord Balaji. It is reported that the Boss's family was at Tirupathi in connection with the tonsuring ceremony of his grandson Yathra. Sathyaraj’s go ahead to Prakash raj!

As much as an accomplished actor he is, seems like Prakash raj is aggressive to establish himself as a producer as well. Of all his production ventures, Mozhi has been hugely successful and he is busy these days in the shoots of his upcoming Vellithirai, which is expected to release in February. Vellithirai’s audio that hit the stands recently is received with good response. Following this, Duet movies has decided to produce two more movies namely Inidu Inidu and Sathyaraj. You heard it right, Prakash raj will produce a movie titled Sathyaraj and will star in the lead role. To avoid apprehensions in the subject matter, he recently called on Sathyaraj and sought his consent for the title.
Last heard, Sathyaraj has acquiesced to the title after which Prakash raj is proceeding with the ground work of the movie. However, there is no official confirmation yet on the movie’s relevance with Sathyaraj’s life or career.

Dhanush on smooch scenes with Nayan

Dhanush’s current project, Yaaradi Nee Mohini is produced by N.V. Prasad and directed by A. Jawahar who had his training under Selvaraghavan. It is a remake of the Telugu film, Aadavari Matalaku Ardhale Verule.
In a recent interview to a weekly, Dhanush was hurled a volley of questions about the on-screen chemistry with Nayanthara in this project. He was particularly grilled to get first-hand information on whether there are any kissing scenes in the film as reported. Denying any such scenes, Dhanush said that Yaaradi Nee Mohini, though a romantic movie, is a thorough family entertainer with all the comedy elements.

Vijay doppelganger in a period film

Jai who starred in Chennai – 28 and had an unmistakable resemblance to Vijay is up with his next venture Subramaniyapuram. According to director Sashikumar, erstwhile Assistant Director to Bala and Ameer, Subramanyapuram is a period film – if you call can a movie set in the backdrop of 1980s, that is. The story is set in Madurai and we have managed our best to get the feel of the Eighties”, says Sashi. He also states that people who watched the previews were impressed at the details that went into the making of movie – especially the intricacies of each frame.
Subramaniyapuram spins around friendship and love, but then “no cinema is stranger than life in itself” declares Sashi as a matter of fact. Jai’s lead lady is Swathi, who played Trisha’s sister in the Telugu hit Adavaari Maatalagu. “Although she hails from Andhra Pradesh, her features are very much Tamil”, vouches Sashi.

Amir Fan of Vadivelu

It is well known that Aamir Khan is very busy with his current project, a remake of the Tamil film Gajini. Director Murugadoss had earlier screened Pokkiri, in which Asin had acted, to convince Aamir of her capabilities. According to industry sources, Aamir while watching Pokkiri had disclosed that he is a great fan of Vadivelu. When Vadivelu was asked to react on this, he said that he is happy that such a great actor enjoys his acting in spite of the language barriers. This implies that language is not an obstruction where comedy is concerned, added Vadivelu. MGR Life Line

Date of Birth
17 January 1917, Kandy, Ceylonn
Date of Death
29 December 1987, Madras, Tamil Nadu, India
Birth Name
Marudur Gopalamenon Ramachandran
Nickname
MGR
Mini Biography
M.G. Ramachandran (1917-1987), popularly known as MGR, dominated like no other, the films and politics of India's Tamil Nadu state. A charismatic actor and philanthropist, he commanded the idolatrous adulation of millions of Tamilians and became Tamil Nadu's chief minister. His achievements in 3 fields, namely films, philanthropy and politics were remarkable considering his humble origins in Sri Lanka. Raised in poverty by a widowed single mother, he had nothing more than his good looks when he got his first break in "Sati Lilavati", a Tamil film of the late 1930s. In the 1940s and 50s, the Tamil film industry was being transformed by screenwriters like Annadurai, Karunanidhi and others belonging to the Dravidian movement. MGR starred in many of the movies they helped make. Annadurai became his mentor and MGR joined the DMK, Annadurai's new Dravidian party. His films made MGR a matinee idol among Tamilians. He also started monetarily helping people in need, sowing the seeds for his reputation as a philanthropist. When Annadurai died as Tamil Nadu's chief minister, MGR's rival Karunanidhi assumed office. MGR accused him of defalcation and was kicked out of the DMK. In 1977, MGR's ADMK (later renamed AIADMK) party was swept into power. In his first term, MGR cleaned up corruption and carried out reforms like having an income limit for backward class people to be eligible for the reserved seats in government colleges and jobs. His reforms proved unpopular, so MGR became another corrupt Indian politician having learned not to rock the boat. Tamil Nadu stagnated during the rest of his reign. Yet his mesmerized legions of fans continued to vote him into power. His death in 1987 created a power vacuum that soon brought his old nemesis, the corrupt Karunanidhi, back into power. MGR was a complex man who triumphed over poverty and tried to improve the lot of the people who revered him. However, in the end, he was a god that failed.

Kalloori Tamanna will play the love interest of Surya in this unnamed venture of K V Anand's.
K V Anand, while discussing his new project says, "Currently I am involved in polishing my script, finalizing technicians and other artists. The story is about a man who struggles to achieve success in life. I want my title to reflect this one line and I am desperately trying to arrive at such a title". According to Anand finding the right title seems to be a Himalayan task right now.

Shankar is going to direct Rajini's next movie and the process for the same has been started.
It was after lots of gossips about Rajini's next movie - few said he is planning to do a movie with Kamal and it was also told that Manirathnam is going to direct Rajini, but all those gossip baloons were punctured and the clear - real news is that Shankar wi
ll be directing Rajini in his next movie.
Rajini has put a condition to the producer and the director.
As the movie is being acted by Rajini, its natural that there will be lots of bidders to distribute the same and in the case of Chandramukhi, it was told that AVM minted to the tune of 100 crores through Shivaji, so Rajini instructed the producer that the movie shall never be sold more that 20 crores altogether.
Now there are gossips that, as AVM was into trouble as the volume of Biz was leaked out, fear over the trouble, the producer is spreading such a news among the media!!!

F Tv Model-Sherya

Shreya who is minting money from Tamil Nadu by appearing sexy on the road shows and movies, followed her costume even in a function which was participated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi.
The issue was yesterday (28.01.2008) taken in the TN assembly by PMK's Velmurugan.
DMK men came in support of Shreya, as they felt she is do such greater things for the cause of Tamilians!
Velmurugan also mentioned the vulgarity shown in the Karunanidhi promoted Kalaingnar TV under the title "Maanaada Mayilaada"
Supporting the vulgarity of the show, minister Arcot Veerachamy claimed that the show has lots of viewers, forgetting that even a blue film will have lots of viewers. He forgets to ask himself why F-TV is being banned by the police in TN!!!

Mrs.Abishek Bachan in Robo

Arya starring Allu Arjun was a blockbuster hit in Andhra Pradesh which won rave reviews. This film was publicized to be remade in Tamil with Gemini films buying the remake rights. For the role of Allu Arjun which was very vivacious, youthful and bubbly, Simbu and Dhanush were said to be in fray and it was later reported that the opportunity fell on Dhanush’s lap. Then when the issue of direction came in, Dhanush’s brother Selvaraghavan was alleged to be wielding the megaphone. However this again was changed and it was said that his cinematographer friend Arvind Krishna will be directing the film. But even this name was dropped and Balasekaran of Love Today was approached by Gemini Films who had booked him to direct the film. Eventually, as the unit is not in a position to commence work, this project has been dropped and Dhanush has gone to Vetrimaran’s camp to do a film.

Ajith's New Look

While his Billa is still keeping the ticket counters busy with activity, Ajith is busy shooting for his yet-untitled next venture in Hong Kong. As informed by us earlier, Ajith and the crew including director Raju Sundaram are stationed in Hong Kong for the first schedule of the actor’s next venture, produced by Karunamoorthy under the Ayngaran banner.
Ajith is said to sport stubble for this movie and images made available by amateur paparazzis who managed to sneak a snap of the actor during the shoots reveal the same. Sources speak in hushed whispers that director Raju Sundaram felt Ajith’s ungroomed whiskers looked good on him that he asked him not to get rid of them for the shoots and thus born a new look. The crew will return to India after their shoots are over and proceed to Ooty for next schedule.

Trisha get's a new LOOK!!

The year is full of promises for Trisha. The Tamil audience saw her in just three movies in the last two years.
She went on a sabbatical from Kollywood because interesting roles weren’t coming her way. But things seem to have fallen in place for the actor now, who has four big banner movies lined up for the year. Among them, the first to hit the screens will be Bheema. It’s a new Trisha the Tamil audience will see in Bheema. Playing Shalini, Vikram’s love interest, Trisha explains that a lot of work had gone into lending her character a loud look.“My look in the movie is new. My character— bold,” she says.Following their onscreen chemistry in Saamy, Vikram and Trisha have been paired for the second time in Bheema. “But it’s a city role this time and it’s action-packed. There’s no comedian in the movie, nor is there an exclusive track for humour. The only lighter side will be the romantic interlude between Vikram and me,” she reveals.“There’s no need to listen to the story of a few directors to take up the role they offer. Lingusamy belongs to that league,” she says, heaping praise on the director she has worked with earlier, for Ji. And one of the first things the director worked on after narrating the story was her body language.“Lingusamy and Vikram helped me immensely in getting the right look for the role. It will show when you watch the movie,” she confidently says. In terms of her looks, her straightened hair, that seem to have gotten monotonous after Something Something Unakkum Enakkum have been replaced with curls in Bheema. As for dubbing in her movies, something she has tried only during Aiyitha Ezhuthu, “No,I haven’t dubbed my voice in Bheema,” she says. “I’d love to do it but my Tamil is too Anglicised for it,” she smiles.

Trisha's Bheema Makes Heavy Collections in the Box office

Trisha, Vikram starrer Bheema has made a whopping 19 crores collection at the box office in its first week of release. This is said to be on par with Superstar rajinikanth Sivaji’s collection in its first week if not more.
Surya and Asin’s VEL had collected 2 and half crores & Ajith’s Billa had made 3 and half crores in Thiruvarur in their first week of release. Bheema has broke this record by making more than 5 crores in that district alone so far.
Linguswamy when speaking about the movie’s sucess said ” Bheema would have made many more records if it was released earlier. But better late than never.” He also dedicated the result to the hard work of his team. “The movies success even after its late release is entirely because of the cast and crew’s hard work”.Trisha seemed very happy about the success of the film. Trisha said that this year has been lucky for her with the success of her two films ‘Bheema’ and ‘Krishna’ and also saw her conquer the No.1 spot in both Tamil and Telugu. Trisha hopes this trend will continue in the months to follow.

Trisha Invests in Real Estate

The year is full of promises for Trisha. The Tamil audience saw her in just three movies in the last two years. She went on a sabbatical from Kollywood because interesting roles weren’t coming her way. But things seem to have fallen in place for the actor now, who has four big banner movies lined up for the year. Among them, the first to hit the screens will be Bheema. It’s a new Trisha the Tamil audience will see in Bheema. Playing Shalini, Vikram’s love interest, Trisha explains that a lot of work had gone into lending her character a loud look.” My look in the movie is new. My character— bold,” she says. Following their onscreen chemistry in Saamy, Vikram and Trisha have been paired for the second time in Bheema. “But it’s a city role this time and it’s action-packed. There’s no comedian in the movie, nor is there an exclusive track for humor. The only lighter side will be the romantic interlude between Vikram and me,” she reveals.” There’s no need to listen to the story of a few directors to take up the role they offer. As for dubbing in her movies, something she has tried only during Aiyitha Ezhuthu, “No, I haven’t dubbed my voice in Bheema,” she says. “I’d love to do it but my Tamil is too Anglicised for it,” she smiles.

Stay order for Bheema in Telugu!

The Chennai High court has issued a stay order for Bheema to be released in Telugu.
The Trisha-Vikarm starrer Bheema directed by Linguswamy was dubbed in telugu and was supposed to be released day after tomorrow all over Andhra pradesh but Financier S.N.KrishnaMurthy has approached Chennai High Court to issue a stay order from the movie being released in Andhra.
According to him, A.M.Ratnam approached him to get 75lakhs for the postproduction of Bheema and he gave it only in the condition that he would he given the rights for Bheema’s Telugu release. But he alleges that not only they have denied him the rights for the movie but also they haven’t paid him the money yet. Listening to his plea the High Court has issued a stay saying that Bheema shouldn’t be released for the next three weeks.
The Bheema team is visibly upset with this decision because they wanted to cash in on the Trisha fame. Trisha’s new film krisha is doing great at the telugu market and reinforced her position at the top of the industry. As of now, Trisha’s fans shud wait for another 3 weeks to catch her in action.

rajini life at a glance

Rajini, the real mantra of Tamil Nadu. There are fan associations across Tamil Nadu dedicated to him. Many more than for any other Tamil star, past or present. Rajinikanth, the carpenter-turned-coolie-turned-conductor-turned Super Star says: “I couldn’t have asked God for more.”

A bit of a recluse, Rajni may be. But everyone who’s had the privelege of a darshan with the thalaivar has come away with a spring in his step and a warm glow in the heart. Warm, friendly and affable, he’s the sort who deserves all the superstardom he’s earned. Such men, indeed, are rare...

It’s been 25 years, believe it or not, since the Periya Thalaivar (big boss) made his debut with an inconsequential role in a Tamil film. From villain and antihero to blockbuster supernova, the gifted actor has made the most of every outing. And he’s deserved every bit of the success. SCREEN analyses why...

It's a wide angle shot. A man is seen opening a gate, dressed in rags and smoking a beedi. A terminally ill disease writ large on his face. Precisely on that frame appears the Sanskrit term shruthi bedham, coupled with an off screen voice, an undoubtedly inauspicious start to any debutante’s first screen appearance, especially in the maiden frame.

The film was Apoorva Raagangal (1975). The film itself was thick in controversy, and nobody took notice of the young newcomer, who was on screen barely for fifteen minutes, muttered a few apologetic words to the wronged woman and ultimately died an unsung, unheroic death.

No one in the audience, even in his wildest imagination, would have thought this nondescript man, who had won the least attention in the film would ever win over millions of hearts in Tamil Nadu. Or ride the state like a colossus. Or even that his sway over the masses would be so intense that he could rewrite the fate of Tamil Nadu politics, exactly two decades after the release of his first film.

K Balachander, the director who has an uncanny knack of creating stars, first met Rajnikant at the film institute, where he was a student. Balachander glanced at the dark young man and crisply asked him to meet him in his office the next day. When Rajnikant walked into his office gingerly, Balachander informed him he was going to act in his next film. Overwhelmed by the sudden offer from a ‘big’ director, Rajnikant just could not believe his ears. It’s a feeling Rajni still recounts whenever in the mood of reminiscence.

Later, Balachander confided in his close friend and associate Ananthu, “Watch out! There is a fire in the young man’s eyes. One day he will take Tamil Nadu by storm.” How true the prediction turned out!

Producers went all out to capitalise on this new “wonder” called Rajnikant, and a string of films projecting him as an anti-hero, with all his stylish mannerisms in full swing, were released in quick succession. Gayathri had him shooting blue films of his wife without her knowledge, Bhairavi, Shankar Salim Simon and the like. Rajni had, by now, become an indisputable star in his own right, a force to reckon with.

Though Rajnikant persistently refers to K Balachander as his “guru”, it was director SP Muthuraman who actually revamped Rajni’s image entirely. Muthuraman first experimented with him in a positive role in Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri, as a villain in the first half and a refined man in the second, accepting a woman with a child ditched by her lover. The success of Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri prompted SPM to make a mushy melodrama with Rajni as a hero sacrificing everything for his siblings, a role ideally tailormade for Sivaji Ganesan! That film was Arulirunthu Arupathu Varai, in which Rajni’s mannerisms were totally missing and he even appeared as an old man in the last few frames. Even while the film was in the making, Rajni had misgivings about whether the audience would accept him in tear jerkers of this kind. But the film got made and its box-office success made Rajni popular among women audiences, too. These two films were a turning point in Rajni’s career — he changed from an actor who merely enthralled the audiences, to one who also made them weep. The acceptance of Rajni sans his mannerisms proved he’d at last become an actor from a star. Around this time came Mullum Malarum, directed by J Mahendran, which established Rajni as a hero with a slight tinge of the negative.

Rajnikant’s entry may have been humble, in an insignificant role but the success he achieved in a very short span was unimaginable. A popular Tamil magazine brought out a special supplement at a time when his still on the make, and, he presto, the magazine’s sales doubled with that issue alone.

Such mass adulation, the thunderous rain of applause when Rajni delivered his lines, all put together, made him a phenomenon. It was at this point that Rajni realised the onus had been thrust on him. The fate of producers hinged on him alone. This sudden exposure to the glare of the media and the popularity and money he never imagined would be his, created a lot of stress in his mind. At that crucial time in his career when his market price had just begun to zoom, he decided to opt out of films completely, sending shock waves to his fans. Balachander, Kamalhaasan and his other well-wishers somehow, coaxed him into staying on.

The second phase of his life started with K Balaji’s Billa, a superhit disproving the canard spread by detractors that Rajnikant was “finished”. He was accepted as a full-fledged hero. Billa was followed by a row of hits like Pokkiri Raja, Thanikkattu Raja, Naan Mahaan Alla and the all-important Moondru Mugham, in which Rajni essayed a triple role. Even two decades after its release, the last continues to be a box-office draw and Rajni’s fans can never tire of the thalaivar’s verbal clash with villain Senthamarai. K Balachander’s first home production, Nettrikkam proved to be yet another milestone in Rajni’s career.

An analysis of Rajni’s career graph shows a remarkable absence of fits and starts. It has been a slow and steady rise to the very top. As Rajni sings in a hit song from Badshah, a man’s life may be divided into eight divisions. Rajni’s own career may be divided into three segments. The first as a villain, the second as a hero with negative traits, and the third and present phase, as the reigning czar of Tamil filmdom. With Rajni’s films fetching crores and his market price skyrocketing, the costs of production of his films became unmanageable. And Rajni has since had to stick to a one film per year formula, sometimes, he could do a film once in two years.

The new trend where his films’ collections exceed normal regional film expectations started off with Badshah, followed by Annamalai, Arunachalam, Ejaman, Muthu and Padayappa. It’s now an accepted fact that only a Rajnikant film can break records set by his own films.

As an actor, Rajnikant’s greatest asset, apart from his style is his sense of humour and comic timing. Like Amitabh Bachchan is popular for his drunken soliloquies, Rajnikant is famous for his comic encounters with snakes, repeated umpteen times.

In the early 80s, Rajnikant made a foray into Bollywood with Andhaa Kanoon, a superhit. But Rajnikant could not concentrate on Hindi films because he was already safely ensconced down South. He still made a few films in Hindi, to mention specially Chaalbaaz which had Sridevi in a dual role. Rajni also enjoys a special kind of popularity in Telugu films and his Peddarayudu (remake of Tamil hit Nattammai) seems to have broken all previous records. The Telugu version of Padayappa has been a money-spinner, too. Rajnikant became a trendsetter recently with his Muthu and its songs becoming a rage in Japan and now, Padayappa running to packed houses in the UK and USA.

Basically a religious person, Rajnikant has always owned up his faith. “I was brought up by the Ramakrishna Mission and it’s from there that I have inherited this religious frame of mind,” he keeps saying. Even his films have him openly sharing his faith. In Arunachalam he mouths that famous line, “God decides and Arunachalam executes it.” His public meetings are always spiced with humour and embellished with anecdotes from mythology.

Married to Lata, an English literature graduate, hailing from an elite Iyengar family in 1980, Rajni has two daughters who are carefully kept away from the limelight. Lata herself a versatile singer, now runs a school called The Ashram. The couple indulges in a lot of charity, the latest being converting his Raghavendra Kalyana Mandapam into a charitable trust to help the poor and needy.

Ego and starry airs are unknown to Rajnikant. During breaks he hardly ever rushes to his air-conditioned makeup room. Instead, he prefers to sleep on the sets, even without a pillow, merely covering his eyes with a wet cloth. He never comes to functions with a retinue behind him and even prefers to drive his own car.

Rajnikant’s phenomenal success and his sway over the masses make people speculate whether he will follow the footsteps of the late MGR and enter politics. Though there has been a lot of pressure on him to enter politics by the likes of actor turned journalist, Cho Ramaswamy (“Rajnikant is the best choice for chief ministership because he has a basic integrity and simplicity, a quality which is very rare these days”) Rajnikant has persistently maintained a diplomatic silence, except for the fact that he openly supported the ruling DMK in the last assembly elections and discreetly in the recent Lok Sabha elections. When pressed, Rajnikant answers in his own inimitable style, “Yesterday I was a conductor, today I’m a star, tomorrow what I’ll be only He knows!”

A bit of a recluse, he may be at heart, but everyone who’s had the privilege of a darshan with the thalaivar has come away with a spring in his step, and a warm glow in his heart. Warm, friendly and affable, he’s the sort who deserves all the superstardom he’s earned. Such men, indeed, are rare.

Trisha pairs with Arya

This year has started well for Trisha. Her Telugu film 'Krihna' with Ravi Teja is a super hit and 'Bheema' is not doing too bad either.

She's now acting with Vijay in 'Kuruvi' and in Radha Mohan's 'Abhiyum Naanum' that are to be released this year.

Trisha has also signed on a film directed by Puri Jagannath and another with Nagarjuna as hero. What about Tamil?

The first will be Vishnuvardhan's 'Sarvam.' "I'm acting in 'Sarvam' with Arya," said Trisha to the press. Trisha is particular that she will act only with top heroes like Ajith, Vikram, Vishal and Rajini, so she's waiting patiently for the right offers.

Her name Soundarya means beautiful and that she certainly is.And with the brains to complement her looks, this 23-years old is ready to take on the film industry by storm. That she is the youngest daughterof Superstar Rajnikanth only adds to her allure. But,while most would imagine the pretty girl would follow in her dad's footsteps,Soundarya chose to become a director instead and also runs a multi-crore animation studio.
Helming a $10million project, with dad in the lead, her film is the first animated film of an Asian superstar. And if the response that her two minute trailer of Sultan The Warrior with a 3D action figure of Rajnikanth somersaulting and taking on the baddies in true 'cool' rajini style is anything to go by...the girl's on the right track.
Talking about her ambitious project, which she says is India,s answer to Spiderman,Soundarya reveals,"I wanted to present Pa in a way,he's never been seen before. It will be every Rajnikanth fans dream come true."Unfazed by the expectations, the doting daughter admits that though she's not nervous, she hopes she can do justice to a superstar who's revered by fans across the globe."There are almost 63,000 fan clubs across nations, "she adds.

With a face as pretty as hers and acting in her genes, didn't she want to pursue acting?"I do get offers, but I'v always wanted to showcase my creativity behind the camera."Letting on a lesser known secrets she says,"I had an option of choosing to play professional golf and going on to study animation.Infact I have played several tourments. And though I chose the latter,Pa was equally encouraging about me pursuing sports.his only advice was do what you want to,but give it 100 percent."
Starting off with directing Rajnikanth in her very first film, where does she go from here?"A coimbination of Kamal Hassan and my dad would be a dream come true.It can only go higher from here.Because only Rajnikanth can break his own records."Seems like sky is certainly the limit for this papa's young girl!
