Actress Illeana Gallery

Bipasha Basu

Born on January 7, 1979 in New Delhi, India, Basu hails from a Bengali family. She is the second of three daughters to her parents, the elder being Bidisha, and the younger—Vijayeta. Although she was born in Delhi, her family later moved to Kolkata.

According to her, she had come into modelling and acting quite by accident, because initially she had planned to study medicine. Basu studied science till the 12th standard, and later took up commerce. Although, as pointed above, she intended to become a doctor, her aversion for dissections made her opt for chartered accountancy. However, in 1996, she met well-known model Mehr Jessia in Kolkata; the latter suggested that Basu take part in the the Godrej Cinthol Supermodel contest. She eventually participated, and won the contest.

Vasu Bhaskar also disclosed that he would bring the affected person to fore after the movie release to meet the media.

Colors of Bollywood

Proud to succeed the Superstar,” says Surya

What would Surya’s film be after Varanam Aayiram? Well, he has signed the dotted lines to star in Ayan, to be produced by AVM Productions. The customary pooja was performed at the AVM office this morning (24-03-08) to launch the film. K.V. Anand will don the director’s cap while Tamanna will share screen space with Surya.
AVM Productions had called for press meet at 11:30 am and surprisingly both Surya and AVM Saravanan were present at the venue at 11:25 am. Veteran director S. P Muthuraman hosted the show. AVM Saravanan delivered the welcome address.

Addressing the media, Surya said that he is happy to star in the very next film by AVM Productions, after Sivaji’s astounding success. It is to be noted that Ayan would be Surya’s second film for AVM after the smash hit Perazhgan that won him acting accolades. This venture is a dream come true, he stated. Recalling his first photo session at director Manirathinam’s office with K.V. Anand, Surya said that he was supposed to have acted in his film earlier but could not do so due to call sheet problems. The actor’s forthcoming venture Vaaranam Aayiram, directed by Gautham Menon, is expected to be wrapped up within a month. He said, “Gautham has extracted the maximum potential from me, perhaps Ayan would even surpass that.”

What started as an ad film sowed the seeds for Ayan, states K.V. Anand. Gossipmongers at that time had a field day spreading rumors that the duo intends to do a film together. “I discussed this story with Surya on the banks of a lake and he liked it. That’s how Ayan happened,” he said. Harris Jeyaraj has been roped in to set the tunes. It is well known that Harris does not like introducing songs that would hamper the flow of the story. But showing keen interest in this project, Harris has recommended all the song sequences.

Though K.V. Anand is a cameraman himself, M.S. Prabhu’s services has been sought to wield the camera. The crux of Ayan is about a 23-year-old and how he attains his goals in life. The director was happy that M.S. Prabhu and lyricist Vairamuthu instantly liked the story, which is an indication that everyone would enjoy it.

Vairamuthu came out with an explanation for the name Ayan, i.e., Naanmugan meaning four faces. He asked: “Would Surya don four roles?” Any answers to that?

'Billa's record

'Billa' has answered those who predicted the end of Ajith.

Before 'Billa', 'Varalaru' was Ajith's hit. 'Azhvar' and 'Kiridam' that followed did not do well in the box office. In fact, 'Azhwar' was a downright failure.

'Billa' project was started when those doubters were about to see the end of Ajith. As it was a re-make film and that too a Rajini film re-make, the talk was both mocking as to what would Ajith do and of high expectations. But Ajith's 'Billa' defeated the mocking and fulfilled the expectations. Unlike others who finance films to make them run in theatres, Billa has crossed 100 days.

'Billa' also has found a pride of place with collections next only to 'Sivaji'. Having had a collection of Rs. 5 crore in Chennai alone, 'Billa' has made a record and found a place among Top 10 movies.

The selection process, scheduled on March 25th 2008, will ake place at the TADCO office situated at the Thirumangalam Housing Board Colony.

Namitha on Rangeela remake

Namitha, the hot star of Kollywood is upbeat about her film assignments. She has been flooded with offers but most of them being twin heroine subject and the lady has no qualms about doing such films. According to this baby faced beauty, even in a small role, one can shine. She says, “Although there may be two heroines, I will choose films where my character will have its own significance and will stand out. Hence I don’t regret choosing such films.” She is currently doing Indra Vizha, 1977, Perumal, Pondy etc. where she will be seen sharing screen presence with another actress.

On her English film Maya, she says that she has completed her part but does not know why the film is not being released. When asked if she would be playing the heroine role in Kannada remake of Hindi Rangeela, Namitha declines and says it is only a rumor and nobody has approached her on this. She is very happy and satisfied with Tamil films and plans to concentrate only here.

Racing off for big money

Bollywood has taken a flying start this summer with Race. The movie has embarked on a great opening three-day weekend and with the reports being highly positive, the trade is pretty sure that the movie will be another hugely successful one in the days to come. With almost no competition from any release until the 11th of April, Race has 3 clear weeks in front of it to make maximum money and wit the kind of release that it has had and the positive feedback, a very good looking balance sheet looks a certainty.

On the star front, the movie is yet another hit, further pushing Saif Ali Khan’s ever growing star status, though last year’s Ta Ra Rum Pum was a bit of a dampener. Akshae Khanna is bang on target this time with his villainous performance after a quiet 2007 where he had Salaam-e-Ishq and Naqaab bombing at the box office. Finally, Anil Kapoor, the most enduring actor in Bollywood makes a stylish statement with his performance as Inspector RD, his whacky one-liners really capturing the audience.

The three leading ladies. Well, it is not often that you get to see such beautiful ladies together on screen and everyone has realized it, quite evident by the collections that the movie is generating. Abbas - Mustan have landed a genuine hit after quite some time.

Trisha's chemistry

For most of Vijay’s fans, she is the princes like actress, who matches perfect for their Ilayathalapathy. For Vijay, she is the most favorite and successful pair on screen. Yes… your guess is correct. She is none other than Trisha, the cute actress of South Screen!

In an interview to a Tamil Magazine, the actress says that she is very proud to be heard herself as the most successful pair of the actor. Kuruvi is the fourth film of Trisha with Vijay after her successful combination in films Gilli, Thiruppachi and Aadhi.
Answering to a question she said: “It is great to hear that I’m the most successful onscreen pair to an actor like Vijay. He is very close friend of mine and very comfortable to me on sets. He is very sweet person and very easy when moves around co stars. Whenever he calls me for his films I do not miss chance. That much of rapport we have been maintaining so far…”

Commenting about her co stars, she says that she is never having enmity with any of the leading heroines at present. According to Trisha, she is maintaining good relationship with all leading heroines like Nayanthara, Shreya and Asin.

Trisha Arya

Arya will act in director Vishnuuvardhan’s next, which will be produced by Ayngaran International. The movie was expected to be a double hero subject with Arjun tipped to be the other hero. Arjun, it is said, declined the offer, as he is not comfortable with double hero subjects. So Vishnu opted to go with Arya alone.

However, Vishnu had another problem in fixing his favorite hero. It is regarding the call sheet of Arya who is acting in Bala’s Naan Kadavul, which is moving in a snail pace. Visnu decided to talk to Bala to get an idea of when Arya would be free from his commitments in ‘Naan Kadavul’. He is said to have requested Bala to finish the movie as early as possible to facilitate him to start the project soon.

Bala is believed to have accepted to help Vishnu by expediting up the process. He is gearing up to finish the project quickly. The latest buzz is that Trisha, the leading actress of south India, will pair up with the young hero.

Is shriya sexy?

Tabu in Kollywood

Seems that director Balu Mahendra was under a lot of diallema, for who would don the actress role inhis next film, Anal Katru. But no one could fit the role aptly, according to him. After the movie Adhu Oru Kanakalam, Balu is doing this project, Anal Katru. The launch of the film took place with the other film, Indiravizha. But Balu is yet to start the shoot. A lot of choices of the actress were given to Balu. The first on the list was Priyamani, then came Malavika and then came the return queen Nagma.

Silanthi

Silanthi directed by former journalist Adhiraj is complete and is all set for release on March 28. It is an edge of the seat romantic thriller with Munna and Monica in the lead. Very rarely we come across movies that defy set sentiments and superstitions prevailing in Tamil film world. ‘Silanthi’, directed by journalist Aadhiraj, seems to be one such film.

The title itself was deemed as an unfortunate thing in the industry circle. The reason behind the belief is that the hurdles faced by Sarath - Jyothika starrer ‘Pachaikili Muthucharam’, which was initially named as ‘Silanthi’. The title was considered as a doomed one and hence it was changed as ‘Pachaikili Muthucharam’. It is a different story that the film went on to become a big failure despite the sentimental amendments.Aadhiraj, however, has the courage to choose the ‘ill-fated’ title. Monica, who acted in Thankar Bachchan’s ‘Azhagi’, and Jayabaduri’s sister’s son Munna have teamed up for the movie.

Even the selection of Fauziya, a woman cinematographer, is against a sentiment. Fauziya, who worked in the movie ‘Uyir’, was alleged by the producer with sluggish work that caused the delay of the movie. Aadhiraj was unperturbed by the sentiment and went with his choice. Subsequently, Fauziya has lived up to his expectation by helping the director to finish the movie within 60 days.

˜Silanthiâ has thus defied twin sentiments by sticking to the title and cinematographer chosen by the director unmindful of what others think about both. The fact that the movie has been finished within very short span without any hiccup has proved the doomsayers wrong.

Let us hope the film would further disprove the sentiments by becoming a big hit.

Kuruvi

Produced By : Udayanithi Stalin
Directed By : Dharani
Starring: Actor Vijay
Actress Trisha
Music by: Vidyasagar
Release date: June 2008

Vijay Trisha starrer ‘Kuruvi’ is shaping up fast and steady. But the entire unit seems to be tight-lipped about the story of ‘Kuruvi’. Recently the shooting for a scene from this flick was shot at T.R. garden.

After returning to Chennai, the cast and crew of ‘Kuruvi’ had started shooting in T.R. garden for almost a week. The scenes involving Vijay and Trisha were shot at this venue. There was a grand set erected. Usually these kind of elaborate sets are put up for song sequences but this one in particular was not meant for a song. On the contrary, it is just for some dialogue sequence, says the grapevine.

True to its name, the team of Kuruvi (a bird) is again flying back to Malaysia towards the end of this month.

Amidst all this hustle and buzzle happening around ‘Kuruvi’, rumors are running rife on Vijay’s next. It is almost certain that Vijay’s movie under the banner of AVM would be directed by Hari. There are rumours saying that Nayantara would play the lead girl.Vijay’s forthcoming film Kuruvi is already making waves. Despite the not-so-great response to his Azhagiya Thamizh Magan, Vijay continues to be popular among distributors.

This has been proved by the fact that a Kerala distributor has obtained the Kerala rights of Kuruvi for Rs. 1.5 crores. The distributor is Mahi, who has previously produced and distributed two big films starring Suresh Gopi and Dileep in Malayalam.

Vijay’s films are hot in Kerala right from his Thullatha Manamum Thullum, which set a record in Kerala. Pokkiri, released last year, collected more than the films of Malayalam superstars Mohanlal and Mammootty that were released around the same time. Even his Azhagiya Thamizh Magan did above-average business in Kerala.

Kuruvi brings together the Ghilli team of Vijay, Trisha, director Dharani and composer Vidyasagar. The film is one of 2008’s most awaited films, thanks to the Ghilli success. The film, produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin, son of Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin, is expected to hit theatres by May.

Aishwarya Rai in the top place

Usually popularity of actors will slide down after marriage.

That is truth till date in Indian cinema. But Aishwarya Rai is an exception. Even after marriage, Aishwarya Rai has reached the first place getting the highest price.

The stars of Hindi films command sky-high prices, as Hindi films are in demand worldwide. After 'Om Shanti Om' Sha Rukh Khan is demanding Rs.30 crore. Akshaya Kumar's price is Rs.25 crore and Rs.20 crore for Salman Khan.Compared to them, Aishwarya Rai price is lesser. Her price is Rs.4 crore for a film. But what she is getting for 'Robot' is the highest ever. After only Aishwarya Rai, Kareena Kapur is demanding from Rs.2.5 to 3 crore. It is a national record for an actor to get the highest price even after marriage.

Lawrence in the re-make of Rajini film

The trend of re-making old films continues.

Especially so with Rajini films. A dozen films are waiting to be re-made after 'Billa'. Kadiresan has already got the rights to re-make Rajini's 'Moonru mugam'.

'Pattiyal' fame Sekar has the right to re-make Kamal's 'Kalyanaraman and Lawrence was supposed to do Kamal's role. Due to the intervention of 'Alibaba' project, 'Kalyanaraman' is temporarily suspended.Lawrence who is doing 'Pandi' has, however, not given up his keenness to act in re-make films. After 'Pandi', Lawrence will be acting in Rajini's 'Thambikku endha ooru? Lawrence himself will be revising the story to suit present day trends.

The director of the film is yet to be decided!

shriya explains her role

Get ready to have Shriya rolling you in the aisles with laughter – that is what the star feels she is confident of doing with her Hollywood debut, The Other End of the Line. Shriya’s career has skyrocketed with offers pouring in from all the other woods –from Bollywood to Hollywood. Her next Kollywood movie, Kanthaswamy with Vikram is eagerly awaited, as are the roles she will do for internationally acclaimed filmmakers, Deepa Mehta and Meera Nair.

Talking of her role in The Other End of the Line, Shriya said it was a romantic comedy set in Mumbai and San Francisco. She plays a call centre employee who falls in love with an American on the phone. The American, thinking she lives in the States, asks to meet her. What is she to do? Confess to him that she lives in Mumbai or fly to Frisco to meet him and continue the deception? Shriya went on to say that her fans have so far seen her dance and cry and do romantic roles but this will be the first time they’ll see Shriya the comedian! Apparently, a lot of the places that are meant to be Frisco were actually shot in Mumbai itself. The movie will probably release around June or July.

A beautiful and silent love story

Starring: Prasanna, Udhayathara, Vadivelu, Vijayakumar, Rajesh, Santhanam Harrish, Chitra, Rangavasan, Pondy Ravi, Javid Iqbal, Neepa Varshini, Priya, Akila, Ashok, Singamuthu

Direction: G Marimuthu

Music: Dheena

Love - it is the elixir of life. Love, they say can move mountains and melt stones. Nothing can stop love and when love is sacrificed for something more sacred, it is still love that wins. For it is love that gives us the strength, and inspires us to do things that our normal selves would not. Love isn’t always about possession or being together-sometimes love also means giving up, parting ways. There have been movies before that have shown love in this light. Kannum Kannum joins that league of rare films that have shown that love can be selfless. A beautifully made, silent love story full of innocence. A whiff of fresh air amidst the rush of popcorn romances.

Prasanna plays an orphan in Chennai who has fought a battle with his cruel fate and emerged successfully as an engineer, ready to take on life. He has a hobby- poetry, and wants to get one of his poems published in a magazine. Much to his surprise he sees his poem in the magazine but under the name of Shenbagavalli. He tracks the origin of the letter all the way to Kuttralam but the poetess' identity is a secret, she had been using a pen name. Prasanna writes letters to 'Shenbagavalli', a simple, chirpy and innocent girl of Kuttralam played by Udhaythara.

The vibes that they shared soon blooms into love, unspoken but understood, silent but strong, more platonic than romantic. As they share their love through letters, destiny brings them closer, within touching distance. And yet the lovers don’t realize it. They loved through letters hoping that some day the gods would unite them for a lifetime. Little did they know that their love was with them, near them, and that time was fast slipping away. As close as they were being brought together by the hands of fate, the farther they were being swept away from their dream of living a life together. When they finally recognize

each other, time has slipped. Destiny has put them in a quandary where they will have to hurt their most beloveds for their love and the decision they have to make is not easy.

The film's message is that love is the most beautiful of all of God's creations, it is meant to spread joy, happiness and smiles. Love that hurts anyone so dear is perhaps not love as love was meant to be. G. Marimuthu, debuting with story, screenplay, dialogue and direction has provided us with one of the cleanest, most honest and endearing love stories of recent times. We can't help feeling sympathetic (a few might feel empathetic) for the young lovers but the director convinces us that the ending could not have been different. The screenplay is disarmingly cute, without any unnecessary intrusions and devoid of unsavory commercial elements. It is love, family and friendship all the way and we can for once declare with confidence that this is how a family movie should be. The dialogues have to be singled out for special appreciation. The technicians too have done their bit convincingly to help the movie on all fronts.

The only let down in the movie is Dheena's music. A more imaginative score could have done wonders to this movie that is already good. Instead, Dheena's score struggles to pass muster. The brilliant lyrics of Vairamuthu seem to have been squandered on some uninspiring composition.

Prasanna continues a busy 2008 with his third release in as many months and after the hit Anjaathey where he played the hateful baddie, getting back to the sweet lover role will be cheered by people who like to watch this simple guy on screen. Udhayathara (who originally began acting with this film but eventually had Thee Nagar releasing first) is really convincing as the bubbly and innocent college-going girl of Kuttralam. The only real commercial element in the movie is the parallel Vadivelu comedy track. Even though completely disconnected from the main plot one cannot help laughing at some of the predicaments he gets himself into. The rest of the cast, which includes Vijayakumar as Udhayathara's father, turn in good performances as well.

Kannum Kannum is a director's movie totally- the effort shows; we can only hope that audience appreciation and the box office outcome is strong enough to match the effort. There have been times when such films have hit the jackpot and times when they have been ignored. The only thing that puzzles us is why it was two years in the making. Perhaps good things take time.

And why haven't we revealed more of the story? Well, it is too good to be on the web. A small, cute and touching love story.

Land dealing

Kadhalil vizhundhen' – A round-up

Kadhalil vizhundhen' is a film produced by a new production company Atlantic Cinemas and directed by P.V.Prasad.

Having worked with directors like V.Sekar, Azhagamperumal, Vijay Milton and the like he has expertise and experience in direction.

The hero of the film, Nakulan, is the younger brother of Devayani. Introduced in 'Boys', Nakulan has considerably reduced his weight through rigorous exercise and strict food habit and has become quite smart.

Sunaina from Andhra Pradesh is being introduced as heroine in this film. New to Tamil cinema, she is very famous in Telugu cinema. She has acted in '10th class' and 'Something Something'.

The one line story of the film is that death can't break up love. The director is working with a passion to make 'Kadhalil vizhundhen' as an important film in Tamil.

32 years after the historic film 'Mullum malarum' by Mahendran, a fight sequence was shot on a winch. Cinematographer Vijay Milton shot the fight between Nakulan and Sampath tying a rope around his waist.Important shots with Nakulan, Livingston and Sampath were shot on the train running on Coimbatore-Mettupalayam route.

The climax shot and a shot of the song sequence 'kadavul padaitha kadaisi azhagiye' were shot at the wooded Thalakonam in Andha Pradesh.

Vijay Antony has composed sensational music for this film using innovative musical instruments.

The director hopes that Vijay Milton may win an award for this film. Vijay Milton has used handle shots for shooting the all the scenes. Especially in the song sequence, it is said that he had done world-class cinematography.

Audio function, now in TV

Holding audio function and collecting a crowd for it is old hat.

Now the trend is to go to a TV channel, make the release, and interact with the TV people and telecast them live. The audio release function for 'Santhosh Subramaniam' will be done in that fashion on 23rd of this month.

'Santhosh Subramaniam' is the Tamil re-make of the Telugu super hit film 'Bommarilu'. Jenilia is Jeyam Ravi's pair in the film. In 'Bommarilu' too she was the heroine. It can be best described as a colourful love story fit for family entertainment.

Jayam Ravi, Genilia

Devisri Prasad has composed music for the film. The live telecast of the audio function will be on Sun TV. It also includes interactions among the hero, heroine and the film unit.

You can enjoy all of them from your drawing room.

Raghuvaran passes away

It is a great loss for Tamil cinema (indeed for South Indian cinema) to lose Raghuvaran suddenly like this. This versatile, understated, elegant actor had been struggling with a few health issues, but nobody thought (or knew) how serous it was. The news that is just coming in is that he was suddenly hospitalized on Tuesday night. The cause of his death is still unknown. He was born on December 11, 1948. He debuted in the award winning film, Ezhavathu Manithan (1982), which dealt with the disillusionment of an engineering student with the corrupt wokring practises of industries. He began as a character actor, then played a hero in a few films, went on to be typecast for a very long time as a smooth villain, and then, more recently, as a character actor playing a brother, an uncle, a senior official, a father and a fellow colleague.

He was outstanding as the sleek politician villain in Shankar’s Mudhalvan. Memorable as Ajith’s supportive elder brother in Mugavari, as Srikanth’s strict father in Roja Kootam, Vijay’s jolly father in Love Today, as Maddy’s cool brother in law in Run, Tabu’s brilliant boss in Kandukondain, Kandukondain, the husband with a secret in Anjali, Vijay’s caring neighbour in Thirumalai, an unconventional teacher in Sivappathigaram, an uncorrupt, ethical civil servant in Marudhamalai, the kind doctor who saves Rajini’s life in Sivaji, the Boss, the not so impressive villain in Bheema and a psychiatrist in Silla Nerangalil - which would become his last released film.

Fans of the actor – and there are many across the world – will never forget what a cool actor he was. He brought depth, intensity, elegance, understatement and style to Tamil acting. It is unthinkable not to see him grace the screen again. He will be terribly missed.

Ambassador for Dhoni team

It would not be an exaggerated statement to say that Indians are passionate about two Cs- Cricket and Cinema. They are almost like two religions which unite the people across the length and breath of the nation and cricket, especially, brings out the patriotic flavor from people. Hence it is only the right move on the part of the organizers to have chosen Vijay and Nayanthara as the star ambassadors of the Chennai Super Kings, the India Cements owned Indian Premier League.

Vijay was formally introduced at a function organized in Chennai on Tuesday which was attended by ace cricketer and former Indian captain K.Srikkanth along with other dignitaries. While speaking at the event Vijay said, “I have always been interested in cricket and follow the game closely. My interest is doubled now especially with my son taking a keen interest in the game”. Further on Vijay said that as he is a resident of Chennai all along and his friends, family members being avid cricket fans, he would like to cheer and support the city’s cricket team. He was also very proud that Dhoni is leading Chennai team and is confidant about his leadership skills which is sure to steer the team to victory.

Nayanthara was not present at the function as she was busy shooting elsewhere.

Kuruvi

Udhayanidhi Stalin’s production house Red Giant Movies has released the first still of its forthcoming venture Kuruvi. With the entire Ghilli team associated with Kuruvi, its progress is closely being monitored in Kollywood circles.

From Kuruvi’s still release recently we can infer that it is going to be another rollicking film from Vijay. Moreover, the design of the title also indicates that it will be an action-packed film.

Expecting this to be as huge a success as Ghilli, Kuruvi has been sold for astounding sums even in the neighboring states – Karnataka and Kerala.
